COO is a contemporary reinterpretation of the traditional cuckoo clock, crafted from perforated metal.
Its silhouette is formed by bending a metal plate into a gentle semicircle, inspired by the arched windows often featured in old Western architecture. This blend of industrial materials with classic architectural elements results in an object that feels unexpectedly warm and tactile, even when it is made of metal.
The front panel showcases perforated metal with smaller circular cutouts. The large circular opening for the cuckoo contrasts playfully with the smaller cutouts, lending the piece a light and airy quality.
The clock’s indexes are precisely aligned with selected cutouts and finished in complementary tones, creating a seamless connection between form and function. The clocks come in 4 colorways, white, ivory, mint blue, and green, neutral calming colors that are versatile in a range of interiors. An accent color in a more saturated tones highlights the hands and indexes, adding subtle vibrancy without overwhelming the design.
The case is crafted from perforated sheet metal using metalworking techniques such as cutting, bending, welding, and painting, processes refined over time in Japan’s Niigata region. The perforated metal is accurately cut with a tool called a punch to ensure clean lines and proper alignment of the holes allowing for efficient production without compromising on craftsmanship. The metal construction provides durability and a refined finish, while the hole-punched surface keeps the piece lightweight. Together, they form a fresh take on the timeless clocks tailored for contemporary living.
